Shree Motilal Kanhaiyalal Fomra Institute of Technology (SMKFIT) known as SMK Fomra Institute of Technology is an engineering institution located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. The Institution is certified with ISO 9001:2000. Recently, the college has found itself in the news for all the wrong reasons. Though currently marred by controversies, it was one of the fast developing colleges in Chennai.

History

Shree Motilal Kanhaiyalal Fomra Institute of Technology was established in 2001 and is affiliated to Anna University. The founder of the college is Late Kanhaiyalal Fomra who formed the Trust in the year 1995. The Institution is owned by the Fomra family, who also own the company Fomra electricals.

Campus and location

The college is located in Thaiyur village near Kelambakkam on Old Mahabalipuram Road (I.T. Highway), 35 km from Chennai. The total area of the campus is 25 acres (100,000 m2), though most part of which is reserved for future development.

Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering and Information Technology are the departments that are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA).

Controversies

The college is facing currently enduring a difficult phase from the year 2010. The suicide of a first year student inside the campus hostel has triggered much campus violence. The student in question was closely related to the chairman of the institution. Allegedly, the student committed suicide as she was rebuked by the chairman, for talking to a male student within the classroom. Following this incident, the chairman has absconded and a new management hierarchy was said to be planned. Ironically, the new management was led by chairman's son. This supposedly new management has rather than plug the violence has only fueled more by interfering in student-teacher affairs and awarding of marks.

Other controversies include demand of high fees compared to the facilities provided. Lack of basic amenities within the campus and interference by the management and awarding low marks to the some otherwise deserving students. Complaints have also been raised about the college website containing spurious information.
